Yogurt Digestive Health Benefits

The kiwifruit is a super prebiotic food
About 100 years ago, a Russian biologist named IIya Mechnikov linked yogurt to digestive health when he noticed that Bulgarian farmers and peasants were living longer and getting fewer diseases than those living in the cities.

What he discovered was they ate fermented yogurt, which he later studied further to prove the bacteria species he isolated, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, had amazing disease-fighting health benefits. These were big and important discoveries for the time, which won him the Nobel prize.

Today in America all yogurt products must contain Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermopiles which are the bacteria used as yogurt starters. Yogurt can be made from any animal milk of which cow and goat are the most popular. The milk is first pasteurized to kill any bad bacteria.

Probiotics in yogurt

After the main bacteria is used to start the yogurt, some manufacturers will add bacteria that are specific probiotics such as L. acidophilus, Bifidobacterium animals, L. case, L. reuteri among others. The product label must say "Contains living yogurt cultures" and not "Made with active cultures" because such yogurts may have been heat treated after it was fermented which would have killed the bacteria.

Which symptoms can probiotics help?

Some people have been successful in curing diarrhea with probiotics. Scientists have yet to identify which specific bacteria strains work and which don't because not everybody has claimed to get help with this symptom after taking probiotics. Some symptoms of IBS have been known to get relief from probiotics if they are of the small intestinal inflammation and bacterial overgrowth type, which would be gas, bloating and abdominal pains.

Treating ulcers

Some believe probiotics can kill specific types of bad bacteria known as H. pylori which is responsible for causing stomach ulcers.

Yogurt now with probiotics and prebiotics

Since much attention has been given to the health benefits claimed by ingesting prebiotics, many products have been adding them not only in yogurt but other packaged foods as well. It's not because of some fad either because the new findings from this research has proved that prebiotics are what probiotics need to grow and multiply.

Prebiotics and digestive health

This research specifically relates to how prebiotics can help balance blood sugar and cholesterol levels, speed up sate transit time in the colon. help with weight control, and perhaps the biggest digestive health benefit prebiotics are responsible for is their work in the large intestine. Here's how:

The prebiotic soluble fiber starts a fermentation process in the large intestine, also called the colon. This fermentation not only feeds the good probiotic bacteria but stops dangerous bacteria from sticking to the colon wall where it would otherwise for potentially dangerous cells. These are the cells that can become polyps which are the precursors of colon cancer.

Go beyond yogurt for digestive health

Yogurt is very healthy for you and your digestive system but to step in up a couple of notches you need the nutrients from prebiotics because no matter how much probiotics you supplement your system with, they are not self-supporting and won't grow with out prebiotics.. simple as that.

Here's what I do

Every morning make a yogurt drink with fruit and skim milk, then get a good dose of prebiotics with the supplement Kiwi Biotic. It's all-natural and is made from kiwifruit, the most nutrient-dense fruit available anywhere.

Learn about the effective, but safe way to natural weight loss. Many of us are tempted by the so-called miracle drugs that will shed extra fat off the body but these often carry potentially serious side effects. We now have many options in the natural supplement market so taking diet drugs made by pharmaceutical companies is not necessary. Go natural!
